Celebrating Yourself: Anaïs' Story
My name is Anaïs (อา-nees), a 30-year-old French speaker from Reunion Island. I have always had a passion for foreign languages. Learning other languages has allowed me to live in countries like Mexico and China. I have been living in Taiwan for 2 years now.
Growing up as a member of the LGBTQ+ community was very challenging for me. My mother was not accepting of my sexuality, and I did not receive support and understanding. When I chose to come out to my friends about who I was, they did not believe me and thought I was joking. It was a very lonely and lonesome time for me. My parents felt ashamed and disappointed in me. I went through a difficult time struggling to find a place that fit for me.
Social attitudes towards LGBTQ+ people have had a profound impact on my life. As a teenager, when I was 15, same-sex marriage was not possible in France. There was no representation or support from the media and society. It made me feel misunderstood and very isolated. I had no certainty about what my future held.
As an LGBTQ+ person, I have faced challenges and experiences. People often expect everyone to conform to stereotypes and make assumptions about their sexual orientation or gender identity. Because of my feminine appearance, I often face reactions from people who make funny gestures while talking to or introducing me to potential partners. People often express surprise and question my sexual orientation, which is the most uncomfortable situation. I often feel like an outsider in a world that does not accept me for who I am.
My LGBTQ+ identity has influenced both my personal and professional life. Coming out to family and friends, and forming relationships with others who may not understand or accept me, has been challenging for me. I have faced difficulties related to my career, especially when considering job opportunities that require me to travel to countries where LGBTQ+ discrimination and persecution occur. I have placed my safety and well-being above all else, which has led me to turn down certain opportunities in life.
I currently live in Taiwan, where the treatment of LGBTQ+ people has progressed greatly. In 2019, same-sex marriage was legalized in Taiwan, which was one of the most significant milestones in Asia. However, there are still legal restrictions that prevent citizens from countries that do not support same-sex marriage from marrying their Taiwanese partners.
To support the LGBTQ+ community, specific policies and actions are needed. Removing legal barriers for international couples and simplifying adoption procedures for same-sex couples would be important changes. I sincerely hope to see more acceptance, respect and legal rights for LGBTQ+ people in my country and around the world.
For those struggling with their LGBTQ+ identity or facing discrimination, it’s important to remember that you are not alone. Accepting and discovering your true self takes time, and it’s okay to take it slow and go at your own pace. Prioritize your safety and seek support from trusted friends, family, or reputable LGBTQ+ support organizations. There’s nothing wrong with being yourself. There are supporters out there to help you walk this path with equality.
LGBTQ+ allies and members can work together to create a more inclusive and accepting society. I want to thank those who have shown acceptance and given us emotional support. LGBTQ+ acceptance should be promoted all year round, not just during Pride. Brands and organizations can make a difference by partnering with and building diverse relationships, and celebrating love in all its forms. Playing a part in supporting diversity is a huge opportunity for positive change, and a chance to create a society where everyone feels represented, valued, and included.
